PMHNPs are registered nurses (RNs) who have advanced training in mental health. They're here to listen to you, assess your needs, and provide treatments for conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, mood disorders, personality disorders, and more. Together, you'll create a plan of care that takes into account your medical history, family situation, and psychological and physical symptoms. This may include therapy, counseling, and medication.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health. They'll work with you to diagnose your condition by performing psychological tests and creating a treatment plan that may include medication and psychotherapy. Like PMHNPs, they can assess, diagnose, and treat patients with a range of mental disorders.
A psychologist is a doctor who focuses on helping people understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. They provide therapy or counseling services and offer evidence-based treatments for psychological disorders. While they don't prescribe medication, they can monitor, evaluate, and diagnose patients before referring them to a psychiatrist for medication management.
A counselor is a mental health expert who provides a compassionate and supportive environment for clients to discuss issues that impact their mental health and emotional well-being. They're here to listen to you, teach you coping skills, and connect you with mental health resources. Whether you're dealing with stress, finances, past trauma, relationships, substance abuse, or more, they're here to help you adopt positive thinking patterns and feel better. A counselor can not perscribe medication.
